John Fleskes locks up Fort Flesk \u2014 and this year\u2019s SPECTRUM jurying is now history.<\/p><\/div>\n

Had the best time this weekend jurying the SPECTRUM 24 Annual with Christian Alzmann<\/a>, Victo Ngai<\/a>, Laurie Lee Brom<\/a>, and Mark Newman<\/a>. It was mind-blowing, enlightening, and grueling. I miss these people already.<\/p>\n

Notes from this weekend:<\/p>\n

When submitting digital entries, make sure they\u2019re\u00a0big enough that jurors can appreciate the love and labor invested in the work. Most entries\u00a0did. A few good ones didn\u2019t. It was a shame\u00a0\u2014\u00a0especially when the work looked so promising.<\/li>\n

In the Three-Dimensional Category \u2014 photography MATTERS.<\/li>\n

WOW. There are\u00a0SO MANY terrific artists out there right now. Inspiring. Approximately 4700 TOTAL ENTRIES this year from all around the world.<\/li>\n

Thanks to Christian, I\u2019ll never look at the acronym \u201cCGI\u201d\u00a0the same way again.<\/li>\n

Most Shocking Moment: Hearing the news that Bill Paxton had suddenly died. The jury was eating Sunday breakfast together, and we proceeded to trade classic\u00a0Paxton movie lines. Great actors don\u2019t\u00a0have to win Oscars to be beloved.<\/li>\n

Bottom Line: If you\u2019re ever fortunate enough to be a SPECTRUM juror \u2014 no matter how many minutes you get with your jury teammates, it won\u2019t be enough.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
