Shoutouts to publisher Gary Turner and editor Marty Halpern, for two more jobs well done.<br><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/1930846479\/ref=s9_asin_image_1\/105-9088744-5966810?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&amp;pf_rd_s=center-1&amp;pf_rd_r=09KYVAJ82HP0Q47YP3GX&amp;pf_rd_t=101&amp;pf_rd_p=288448401&amp;pf_rd_i=507846\"><br>A THOUSAND DEATHS<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Alec_Effinger\">George Alec Effinger<\/a>\u2026this one boasts an introduction by multi-Hugo Award winner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fortunecity.com\/tattooine\/farmer\/2\/\">Mike Resnick<\/a>, and an afterword by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andrew_Fox\">Andrew Fox<\/a>, author of the cult classic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Fat-White-Vampire-Blues-Andrew\/dp\/0345463331\/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1\/105-9088744-5966810?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1189789282&amp;sr=1-1\">FAT WHITE VAMPIRE BLUES<\/a>. It\u2019s an elegant, poignant collection of Effinger stories revolving around George\u2019s semi-autobiographical character Sandor Courane, and it contains some of the finest writing he ever did.\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/johnpicacio.com\/onthefront\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/GWLAcover.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/johnpicacio.com\/onthefront\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/GWLAcover.jpg?w=680\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Girl-Who-Loved-Animals-Stories\/dp\/1930846495\/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1\/105-9088744-5966810?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1189789315&amp;sr=1-1\">THE GIRL WHO LOVED ANIMALS<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scifi.com\/scifiction\/originals\/originals_archive\/mcallister\/mcallister_bio.html\">Bruce McAllister<\/a>\u2026one of 2007\u2019s best single-author collections; it\u2019s that good. Bruce was a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehugoawards.org\/\">Hugo Award<\/a> finalist this year for his short story \u201cKin\u201d which is included in this book.  I loved his story notes that accompany each piece. Afterword by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barry_N._Malzberg\">Barry N. Malzberg<\/a>, and an introduction by the great <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harry_Harrison\">Harry Harrison<\/a> who says, \u201cAmong top short story talents in the field, McAllister is a leader. Polished, moving, thought-provoking \u2014 this collection is without parallel.\u201d Hard to find higher praise than that.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/johnpicacio.com\/onthefront\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/THOUSANDDEATHS.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/johnpicacio.com\/onthefront\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/THOUSANDDEATHS.jpg?w=680\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/a><br><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/johnpicacio.com\/onthefront\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/01\/GWLA.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/johnpicacio.com\/onthefront\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/01\/GWLA.jpg?w=680\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/a><\/p>\n<\/body>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cover illustration by me for both of these.
