Happy B-Day, Star Trek

SFSignal reminds us all that today in 1966, the very first episode of STAR TREK aired (“The Man Trap”). Can’t remember which episode of STAR TREK was the first one I ever saw, but watching it in syndication after-school was a seminal part of my early years. Seen here: my 2nd grade school photo, circa 1976, rocking my prized homemade Mr. Spock shirt, with insignia patch sewn by my mother. It’s amazing how large my dome was even at that tender age. Fast forward to 2006 — that same kid illustrated this triptych for David R. George III’s STAR TREK trilogy commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the show (published by Pocket Books). And yeah, it really was a thrill. Live long and prosper, Trek. 🙂

  1. John — if I could’ve found some, I probably would’ve worn them. I consider myself fortunate that didn’t happen…

Christopher — thanks, man! Hope you’re doing well over there.

    Dia — thanks. 🙂

Chris — Kids who wore Kirk shirts thought they automatically were gonna pull the chicks. Fools. Clearly you and I were ahead of the game, and realized that the real aphrodisiac was the homemade Spock shirt.

  2. That’s a wonderful shirt John! Do you still have it?

My brother-in-law is a visual effects person. He was the “visual effects R&D supervisor” on the first motion picture, 1979.

    Cute picture too!

  3. Thanks, Christine…..no, unfortunately, I’m not sure where that shirt is. I suspect it might be a tight fit these days though. 😉 Wow! Your brother worked on the first ST flick? That’s awesome. Saw the Directors’ Cut of that movie a few months ago…..visual effects and music on that one still hold up.

Paul — hard to forget “Devil in the Dark”, isn’t it? That’s the one where Spock mindmelds with the big brown blob….probably not Leonard Nimoy’s finest hour.

    Deanna — thanks! 🙂

  4. I remember watching that first episode. I even remember watching the ads they showed all summer leading up to it. Also, the last time I trick-or-treated I went as spock, though I had the wrong color shirt. My mom helped me make the pointed ears out of “flesh” colored tape.
